"Durham Cathedral is one of the great experiences of Europe to the eyes of those who appreciate architecture"
"Sir. Nikolaus Pevsner"
The Cathedral church of Christ,Blessed Mary the virgin and St Cuthebert of Durham,known as Durham Cathedral,is situated in the city of Durham, England.The cathedral is considered romantic,even if there are some structural innovation that prelude the gothic period,like the pionted arch.
The Bishop William of st.Calais decided,in 1903,to found a cathedral when Cuthebert's relics were brought to Durham.
The cathedral remains a center for Christian worship today.The Cathedral presents the latin cross plan,divided with a nave and two aisles.The nave includes eight spans and it was completed around 1133.The apse was demolished by Richard le Poore,replacing it with an oriental transept,know as "Chapel of the nine altars".The cathedral cointains also a rose window.Beside the Cathedral stand the castle of Durham and and the Wear's river surround them.
The cathedral includes:
1)Galilee Chapel;
2)Western towers;
3)Chapel of Nine altars;
4)Central tower;
The cathedral was used as the magic school ,Hogwards,in Harry Potter's film.
Durham Cathedral ,now,is regarded as "World heritage" by UNESCO,not only for its pleasing norman architecture,but also for the relics of St.Cuthebert.
