Jackson square is an historical square situated in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

The square was designed by Louis H. Piliè. He took inspiration from another important place: Place des Vosges, Paris.

Before the battle of New Orleans this place had the name of Place d’ Armes but, after the battle, it was renamed Jackson Square.

In the center of the square there is an equestrian statue of the general that renamed the place: Andrew Jackson. On the other side of the square there are three important 18th century buldings: St. Luis Cathedral, the Cabildo and the Presbytere.

The most important of them is St. Louis Cathedral;

On its left there’s the Cabildo, which was the city hall but now it’s a museum;

On its right there’s the Presbytere; at the beginning it was the house of the city’s Roman Catholic authorities; during the 19th century became a courthouse and during the 20th century it became a museum.

During the 18th and 19th century the square was used for the public execution of disobedient slaves. From the 1920 to the 1980 was used by painters and also by musician.

Nowadays the square is used for different concerts: live music is regulary played in this place.

Other important elements of the square are Pontalba Buldings and Jax Brewery bulding. At the groundfloor of Pontalba Buldings we can find different restourants and shops while,at the other floors, there are a lot of flats. Jax Brewery was the home of local beer but now it has been converted into an important business area with restourants and different kind of shops. Another important attraction is the Cafè du Monde, open for all the day, which attracts a lot of people.

Jackson square appears also in different important films such as Angel Heart and The curious case of Benjamin Button.
