The Sagrada Familia-Barcelona,Spain

The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (official Catalan name; Spanish: Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia; "Expiatory Church of the Holy Family"), often simply called the Sagrada Família, is a massive, privately-funded Roman Catholic church that has been under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain since 1882 and is not expected to be complete until at least 2026. A portion of the building's interior is scheduled to open for public worship and tours by September of 2010

Considered the master-work of renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), the project's vast scale and idiosyncratic design have made it one of Barcelona's (and Spain's) top tourist attractions for many years.

The Temple of the Sagrada Familia

Josep Maria Bocabella Verdaguer (1815-1892)was a bookseller who, driven by great piety and deep religious fervor, decided to found an association of devotees to St.Joseph baptized Associaciò Josefina.Bocabella wanted to build a temple to be dedicated the Holy Family and that is how in 1881 he directed the association to buy land in the area known Poblet. The first draft of the future expiatory temple of the Sagrada Familia was designed by architect Francesc de Paula del Villar i Lozano in 1882 but was discontinued in 1883 after many disagreements between Villar and tha architect Joan Martorell Montells.Directions  of the work was offered in Martorell that gently suggested but did not accept his former aide Antoni Gaudì.A since then time takes forms and a spirit different, and tha original plan proposed by Villar fell into oblivion. When Gaudì began to drive the work,he complained about the provision of the crypt already there,in that he preferred to orient the building in the block diagonal direction, not being able to carry a cellar out his idea, merely a large moat surrounding the crypt, which ceased to be a cellar, and to supplement it by changing only the motives of the capitals that went from something natural interpretation of the Corinthian flora. In the 1892 work began Facade of the Nativity. In 1925 he finished the first part of the Sagrada Familia. The architect could not continue his work.Nevertheless,in 1923,it reached the final solution of aisles and roofs using a plaster model of a scale of 1:10 and 1:25.The work went ahead anyway becouseof plastic left by Gaudì,partially destroyed during the Civil War,but which can be seen at the Museum of the Sagrada Familia. The expiatory temple of the Sagrada Familia is a church aisle to 5,with 3 facades, the Nativity,Passion and Glory in the end of the foot of the church.Gaudì designed this temple not only as an expression of its natural architecture, but also as a biblical text with architectural form.
