The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is the most famous monument in Paris. It is the most important symbol of both Paris and France. The structure was built between 1887 and 1889 and it was planned by Gustave Eiffel. The structure is made by puddled iron, and it stends 324 metres , the metal structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs 7,300 tonnes while the entire structure, including non-metal components, is approximately 10,000 tonnes.

More than 200,000,000 people have visited the tower since its construction in 1889. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the tower has been used for radio transmission. The tower has two restaurants:Altitude 95, on the first floor 311 ft (95 m) above sea level; and theJules Verne, an expensive gastronomical restaurant on the second floor, with a private lift.

The tower was inaugurated on 31 March 1889, and opened on 6 May. In 1909 the City had planned to tear it down, but as the tower proved valuable for communication purposes, it was allowed to remain after the expiry of the permit. Maintenance of the tower includes applying 50 to 60 tonnes of paint every seven years to protect it from rust. The tower is currently tpainted a shade of brownish-grey.

In the New Year's Eve 1999, the Eiffel Tower played host to Paris' Millennium Celebration. On this occasion, flashing lights and four high-powersearchlights were installed on the tower, and fireworks were set off all over it.

The tower was built in two years during the hundredth centenary of the French Revolution, on the occasion of fourth Universal Exhibition set up on Champ de Mars.

The shape of Eiffel Tower is planning to contrast the wind force that differently can compromise balance of the structure. At the end of exhibition ,the tower was saved by demolition despite the wishes of some citizens. Originally the Eiffel Tower was used for the radio transmissions and scientific experiments.

Under the balcony, on all four sides of the first floor, are engraved the names of 72 famous French scientists and engineers to credit their studies.
