Altar of Homeland

The Victorian best know as "altar of the homeland" is a national monument located in Rome, in Venezia square.This beautiful monument is called "The Victorian", because is dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II, first king of Italy.

Built in Botticino marble (The Victorian is the largest Botticino marble monument created), this monument was designed in 1878 after the death of Victor Emmanuel II and it had the objective to celebrate him as a father of the nation and become the symbol of United after the Rome of the Popes and Caesars.
The construction was begun in 1885 and requested many repeals in the area adjacent to the Capitol. While the entire building took a long time the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II, the fulcrum of the entire monument , was completed in 1889. The entire complex was inaugurated on June 4, 1911 for the celebration of fifty years of the unification of Italy, but was completed in 1935.


The main elements of this monument are: the colonnade in the Corinthian style, the steps many times restored and reopened in 2000, the Altar of the homeland which is the best known part of the monument, below which there is a statue of the goddess of Rome and the bas-relief representing the Labour (agriculture, breeding,irrigation, ecc) and finally the numerous statues, among which the most important that the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II and the two quadrilles

on the sides that represent the freedom (Civium libertati) and the unit (Patriae unitati)
