The Shard, London Bridge Quarter

"I foresee the Shard as a small vertical city for about seven thousand people to work in and enjoy

and for hundreds of thousands more to visit from all over the world."

The Shard is a skyscraper under construction in Southwark, London.

The construction began in 2009 and the building will be complete in Summer 2012: it will not only become London’s tallest tower, but also the tallest building in the European Union.

The Shard replaces the Southwark Tower, a 1970's building located on London Bridge Street.

Nowadays, it is considered an exceptional building because The Shard realises the modernist dream of an entire social structure: it will integrate offices, restaurants, housing, a luxury hotel and spa with public spaces at high level, ensuring a functional and accessible icon for London. So, The Shard will be a landmark for the city and it will benefit not only tenants and residents of the Shard but also the local community by becoming a vibrant public space for everyone to enjoy; in fact, London Bridge Quarter will be one of London's most vibrant, cosmopolitan and well-connected areas!

The Shard was designed in 2000 by Renzo Piano; he said: "The tower is designed to be a sharp and light presence on the London skyline" and he sketched on the back of a restaurant menu, conceiving a landmark in London's architectural history.

Renzo Piano's outstanding project is based on a sophisticated use of glazing, with expressive facades of angled panes intended to reflect light and the changing patterns of the sky, so that the form of the building will change according to the weather and seasons.

Uniquely, the Shard will be open to the general public who can visit the viewing platforms on floors 68-72. The Shard viewing galleries offer breathtaking 360° views across London. The galleries are expected to attract over half a million visitors a year and with visibility at 800 ft are certain to become a major tourist attraction.

The Shard will define the image of London's skyline.
