Stonehenge
Stonehenge it is a neolithic site and has attracted visitors from earliest times.
This primitive stone monument was built about 4000 years ago, on Salisbury plain in Wiltshire, England about 137 kilometres southwest of London. It is the most remarkable prehistoric site in Britain.
The stones we see today represent Stonehenge in ruin.
At first look, this enigmatic site it appears more little than imagined but the stone circle enclosure is over 300 feet in diameter.
Why anyone ever decided to build Stonehenge remains a mystery. There
are different theories about its original use, and no one is certain why it was built .
One theory states that it was a kind of astronomic observatory, from which stars and planets could be observed. Another theory suggest that it was a Druid temple. Very little is known about the ancient druid, but we know that the Druids were suppressed after the Roman conquest. According to some people, they were medicine-man who practiced human sacrifice.
Besides scientific theories, there are also legends about this monument. According to one if these legends, it was built by the devil, who carried the stones from Ireland one by one and set them on the plain.
For the construction they have been used two types of stone: sarsen e bluestone.
The blocks in sarsen, are of greater dimensions and they come from the Marlborough Downs; the bluestone is a detail type of stone that it is found in Preseli Hills, roughly 240 miles away, at the southwestern tip of Wales.
